Congratulation, Jay Myers!

Ky Swisher, SVHS Asst. Principal/AD presented this to Jay a the August BOE Meeting.

 I have the privilege of recognizing one of the great icons in Smoky Valley history.  Coach Myers has been coaching and leading Kansas high school kids for 45 years, with 35 of those years being at Smoky Valley.

Coach’s legacy at Smoky Valley runs deep and extends over generations of families and students. The following is a list of teams that Coach has been involved with that have finished in the top 3 in state competition;

1988 - Football - State Champions

1991 - Football - Runner up

1992 - Girls Track and Field - State Champions

1993 - Girls Track and Field - State Champions

1996 - Boys Track and Field - Runner Up

2019 - Girls Track and Field - 3rd place

2019 - Boys Track and Field - Runner Up

2020 - Boys Cross Country - Runner Up

2021 - Girls Track and Field - State Champions

2021 - Boys Cross Country - 3rd place

2022 - Girls Track and Field - State Champions

I should also note that I am fully convinced that had the 2020 Track and Field season not been canceled, Girls Track and Field would have won state that year as well and would be the back to back to back State Champions.

To add to his accomplishments, Coach Myers was named the 2019 Boys Track and Field Coach of the Year and the 2021 Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year. One of his proudest achievements in recent years was qualifying the entire Girls XC team for State for the first time in school history.

In the 2022 season, the Girls Track and Field team went through the season, winning every meet except for one, where they placed 2nd, including earning Central Kansas League Champions, Regional Champions, and State Champions. At the state meet, our girls accounted for medals in 11 events and doubled the team point total of the 2nd place team. For this dominating and memorable season, Coach Myers has been named the 2022 Kansas Coaches Association Girls Track and Field Coach of the Year. Congratulations to Coach Myers on this very well deserved recognition.
