Fee-Based All-Day Kindergarten Information and Collection Procedure

for Smoky Valley

The Smoky Valley School District is offering fee based, All-Day Kindergarten for the 2015-16 school year.  As in the past, both elementary buildings will continue to offer All-Day Kindergarten for Smoky Valley students.  Research shows an All-Day Kindergarten curriculum is a worthwhile investment that moves students toward greater social and academic success in a stimulating environment.

What is a fee-based All-Day Kindergarten?

The fee-based Kindergarten program will continue to bring All-Day Kindergarten to families who choose to participate, but parents will be assessed a fee for the second one-half of the day.  The fee is $100 per month (or approximately $5.39 per day) for the additional half-day. Fees will be reduced by 1/2 ($50 per/mo.) for students qualifying for the free/reduced meal program.

Why the option?

State funding only supports half-day programming, which will continue to be an option for kindergarten students. The fee-based program offers an All-Day option. We have had tremendous public support for All-Day Kindergarten, but with the current economic climate the district is not able to provide the additional funding that would be required.

How many kindergartners will there be in each class?

Class size may vary, depending on the number of students enrolled.  Three (3) class sections are offered at Soderstrom.  The class sections have averaged twenty students and below.

What will the program look like?

We will continue to offer the same quality all-day program, just as we have since 2008.  Because of the outstanding proven success of teaching kindergarteners all day, the district has chosen to offer parents the opportunity to pay for the service, rather than eliminate it because of budget constraints.  This program will allow students to continue to benefit from increased instructional time in the core academic areas and also have opportunities for non-core areas that are not possible to include in a half-day setting.

What if I choose NOT to send my child to the all day program?

Parents may choose to send their child for only one half day.  In this case, the child will attend in the A.M. only and be dismissed before lunch.  Busing will be provided for all out-of-town students.  Unfortunately students who are not able to attend all day will not receive the same academic opportunities because of lost instructional time in the afternoon.  No fee will be assessed for students who only attend for one-half day.

How will fees be assessed?

Fees for All-Day Kindergarten ($100) will be payable on a regular monthly basis, due on the 15th day of the month.  The entire fee for this program is $900 per year.  Families who have completed the necessary application forms and qualify for free/reduced meals will be charged $450 for the year ($50/month).

The first payment is due to the school building office on August 15th and the final payment must be made by April 15th.  Parents are welcome to make additional payments or full payment in advance as long as the entire fee is paid by April 15th.  Failure to keep payment current will result in parental notification on the 25th of the month.  If payment is not received within 30 days the building and district administration may recommend that the child be withdrawn from the program and returned to the half-day program.

The school district plans to make transportation available for all students (grades Pre-K through 12) residing outside of the city limits.  Students residing in Marquette will be picked up by the buses at the loading zone on the south side of the MES building for transportation to Lindsborg.  Transportation will begin on Thursday, August 13.

Note:  A transportation request form must be completed by all new students requesting transportation, including Pre-K and Kindergarten students if a form was not completed at Kindergarten Roundup and Pre-K registration.
