Volleyball
The game volleyball was invented in 1895 by a guy named William G. Morgan. Volleyball was originally called mintonette and was invented after a game called basketball was invented. It was first played by raising a tennis net. The net was only 6'6" hign Though the average American was shorter in the 19th century. Today there are 800 million volleyball players worldwide and 46 million of them are in the U.S. The game was originally designed for a large class of buinessmen who desired an activity that was not as strenuous as basketball. In 1896 the game was introduced to nationally at a YMCA Sports Conference. At the conference Mr. Morgan was convinced to change the name of the game to "Volleyball." Morgan. 1896 - Morgans handwritten copy of the volleyball rules was turned over to the YMCA Physical Director's Conference. 1897 - Offical volleyball rules included in Handbook of the Athletic League of YMCAs of North America. 1900 - A specific ball was designed for the sport. 1916 - In the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be stuck by another player (set and spike) were introduced. 1917 - The game was changed from 21 points to 15 points. 1920 - Three hits per side (bump, set, spike) and back row attack rules were instituted. 1922 - The first YMCA national championschips were held in Brooklyn, NY. 1930 - The first two-man beach volleyball game was played 1934 - The approval and recognition of national volleyball refrees 1937 - At the AAU convention in Boston, action was taken to recognize the U.S. 1947 - The first two-man beach tournament was hels. 1949 - The first World Championships were held in Prague, Czechoslovakia. 1964 - Volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in Tokyo. 1965 - The California Beach Volleyball Association was formed. 1947 - The World Championships in Mexico were telecast throughout Japan. 1975 - The US National Women's team began a year-round training regime in Pasadena Texas. 1977 - The US National Men's team begins a year-round training. 1978 - Volleyball Emporium if founded in Torrance CA. by Greg Saunders. 1981 - Volleyball Publications and Volleyball Emporium merge to create Volleyball. 1983 - The Association of Volleyball Professional was formed. 1984 - The US won their first medals at the Olympics in Los Angeles. 1986 - The Woman's Professional Volleyball Association was formed. 1987 - The FIVB added a Beach Volleyball World Championship Series. 1988 - The US Men repeated the Gold in the Olympics in Korea. 1989 - The FIVB Sports Aid Program was created. 1990 - The World League was Created. 1992 - The Four Person Beach League was started in the US. 1994 - Volleyball One Player catalog was born. 1995 - Volleyball was 100 years old! 1996 - Two-person beach volleyball was added to the Olympics.
